FAQ
-
A CHL is a permit that allows you to carry a handgun in a hidden way. You need it to follow the law and avoid legal trouble if you want to carry a concealed gun.
-
To apply, you must be at least 21 years old, live in Oregon, and have no serious criminal record. You also need to meet state and federal rules for owning a firearm.
-
You need to take a safety class, fill out an application, and visit your county sheriff’s office. They will take your fingerprints, a photo, and do a background check.
-
You need to complete a gun safety class that explains how to handle firearms safely and teaches the laws about carrying a concealed gun.
-
It costs about $65 for the application fee and background check. The safety class is usually $40 to $80 depending on where you take it.
-
After you turn in your application, it usually takes 30 to 45 days for the sheriff’s office to process it and send you your license.
-
Some states accept an Oregon CHL, but not all of them. This is called “reciprocity.” Check the rules for the state you’re traveling to before carrying your gun there.
-
You can’t carry a concealed handgun in schools, courthouses, federal buildings, airports, or private property that has signs saying no guns allowed.
-
Yes, your CHL expires every 4 years. You need to renew it by going back to the sheriff’s office and paying a renewal fee, usually around $50.
-
If your application is denied, you’ll get a letter explaining why. You can appeal the decision or fix the problem if it’s something like missing paperwork.
-
Concealed carry means your gun is hidden under clothing or in a bag. Open carry means your gun is visible. Open carry is legal in most places, but some cities have extra rules.
-
Yes, most CHL classes include a short test at the end to make sure you understand gun safety and the laws.
-
Carrying a concealed gun without a CHL can get you arrested. You might face fines, jail time, and lose your right to own a gun in the future.
-
In Oregon, you’re not required to tell the police if you’re carrying, but it’s a good idea to let them know during a traffic stop or other interaction.
-
If you lose your CHL, contact your county sheriff’s office to get a replacement. If you move, update your address with the sheriff’s office within 30 days.
